A country dominated by wilderness, Botswana is a destination for highly authentic African safaris. This is an animal kingdom with an unrivaled diversity of habitats. A multi-day safari here creates a very rounded impression of Africa’s wildlife. We recommend Botswana to those who want to escape the world and be truly immersed in the safari experience.

TANZANIA
Visiting Tanzania is like a safari from the documentaries. Home to the great wildebeest migration and many of Africa’s most famous destinations, it’s the country with more iconic wildlife than anywhere else. A safari here is always raw and unscripted. We recommend you visit at least three destinations, as each habitat is very different.
We Recommend
- Serengeti – These vast world-famous grasslands are home to more large mammals than anywhere else on the planet. The great wildebeest migration is here nine months of the year.
- Ngorongoro Crater – A veritable Eden, where six ecosystems and 30,000 mammals meet in the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera.
- Northern Circuit – Elephant-filled Tarangire and beautiful little Lake Manyara are excellent destinations to combine with nearby Ngorongoro.
- Southern Tanzania – Off the beaten track, Selous and Ruaha are two of Africa’s largest safari destinations. Come for thrills and connoisseur experiences.

KENYA
The grand dame of Africa’s safari industry, Kenya has the greatest choice of wildernesses and destinations. Private conservancies create a more intimate experience, especially in the Masai Mara. Kenya is relatively good value as well, especially if you seek private safari experiences.
We Recommend
- Masai Mara – World-renowned grasslands that showcase battles between big cats and their prey. Wildebeest cross the Mara River here as part of their migration.
- Amboseli – A vast savannah where elephants roam beneath the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.
- Laikipea – A huge conservation success, this area of private conservancies gets you incredibly close to the full range of wildlife.
- Samburu – Wild and remote, Samburu is a getaway in a wilderness that rarely sees visitors.

UGANDA & RWANDA
Southwestern Uganda and northwestern Rwanda are the only two places in the world where you can go encounter wild mountain gorillas. Both countries also offer intimate experiences with chimpanzees and other Congo Basin primates. We don’t recommend the countries’ big-game safari destinations. Why not? It’s better to combine Uganda or Rwanda with a safari in Tanzania or Kenya.
We Recommend
- Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) – Our recommendation if you don’t have much time and want to incorporate gorilla trekking into your African safari.
- Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Uganda) – The other gorilla trekking option, this park is home to the new and exclusive gorilla habituation experience.

NAMIBIA
Namibia is wild and rugged, a country with spectacular desert landscapes and some big mammals. It’s a place for the adventurer within you. Namibia can be combined with its neighbors Botswana or South Africa. We highly recommend local flights as these hugely reduce travel time while providing the most superlative of views.
We Recommend
- Etosha – Isolated in northwestern Namibia, this is one of Africa’s most underrated safari destinations. It’s hard to get to but very rewarding.
- Namib Naukluft and Sossusvlei – The world’s greatest sand dunes are a place of escapism and desert dreaming.

ZAMBIA
While still developing as a safari destination, Zambia offers some superb off the beaten track experiences. It lacks some of the famous wildlife and habitats, so tends to favor visitors who have been to Africa before. Victoria Falls are shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe, with the Zambian town of Livingstone a relaxing place to end a safari after exploring nearby Botswana.
We Recommend
- Livingstone and Victoria Falls – Relax at a lodge on the Zambezi River and take in the majestic falls.
- South Luangwa & North Luangwa – Some of the best places in Africa for nighttime game drives and walking safaris.
- Kafue – Pure unfiltered wilderness that is not for the faint of heart, but for the hardcore adventurer within.

And while the country is usually overlooked, it may be ideal if you seek a safari in places where few other visitors venture. Victoria Falls is located here and is a destination to entice everyone.
We Recommend
- Victoria Falls – Most of the falls are in Zimbabwe and it’s a lovely place to go after a safari in Botswana or South Africa.
