Faru Faru River Lodge has the feel of a Zanzibar retreat with small beaches leading down to crystal clear swimming pools, with views of the bush and the Grumeti River. It’s quite a contrast but it works. True barefoot luxury in the bush, with yet again another Michelin star chef. The lodge is rustic, and each room has a wall dedicated to glass, so sweeping views of the surrounding bush can be enjoyed at all times, a small shady verandah provides relaxing rest from the day time heat.

SERENGETI SAFARI

Serengeti Safari Location: Serengeti, running from the Ngorongoro Crater to the border of Kenya’s Masai Mara, Northern Tanzania
Climate: Hot and dry during Jun – Oct & Dec – Mar, rainy season from Apr, May and nov
Typical Landscape: Rolling grass plains, rocky kopjes, rivers

The Serengeti has long been famed as one of the most beautiful wildlife rich areas of Africa in which to go on safari, and it certainly lives up to its reputation, never failing to capture one’s heart as you are confronted by all the romanticism and drama that Africa has to offer. Located in the North West region of Tanzania, with an invisible border with Kenya’s Masai Mara. The Serengeti ecosystem spans 30,000 sq km and is host to the annual wildebeest migration, which remains in Tanzania for approximately 8-9 months of the year.

To see some of the two million wildebeest try to cross the treacherous Mara River in pursuit of Kenya’s fresh grass is an unforgettable experience – and to game drive across the open plains without another person or vehicle in sight, is enough to make the heart flutter. The Serengeti is typically an end point for the Northern Circuit Safari, and is remote, starkly beautiful and deserted in the areas we recommend.

The Luxury Safari Company’s favourite camps in the Serengeti are Serian Serengeti and Lamai Nomad – these all combine beautifully as a Northern Tanzania Circuit safari and beach holiday, with beach options on ZanzibarMozambique, and the Tanzania Coast.
